3 hidden gem apps you’ll fall in love with if you’re a developer
Brain:code
Available for iOS and Android, free with in-app purchases (hints).
Super fun logic game, it’s nothing like classic IQ games, but more think-out-of-the-box game. The gameplay is 100% with text commands and for me, it feels a bit nostalgic since it reminds quests from the 80s-90s. There are 40 levels of different complicity, and I had some fun hours playing it.
Available for iOS and Android, free but has a premium subscription.
A very convenient cross-platform app that saves webpages of your choice to “read-it-later”. You see a promising article but don’t have time to read it at that moment? Probably you’ll add it to bookmarks… the list that is never empty and also the list you almost never open. With this app, you can stay focused and add any webpage to the list which is synced between your laptop and phone. So in one click you can postpone and read it when you’re available, for example, next time you are stuck in a traffic jam in a cab.
Notability
Available for iOS, free, free but has a premium subscription.
If your brain rocks in generating ideas, but sucks at holding them — you probably try (or regret you don’t) use notes on daily basis. Among hundreds of notes apps, I really like this one. There are three killer features for me:
- awesome handwriting recognition.
- math equations and formulas recognition. Also a super cool feature for a developer.
Both algorithms run on MyScript which is rather promising. For me, it works even when I use my finger and not a pen.
But the main reason why I prefer this app to Goodnotes or other alternatives — it allows voice recording. Sooooo many times good thoughts and ideas came to me when I wasn’t able to reach my laptop or even type a note and the default phone voice recorder is not that cool :) Voices are synced to notes which is very convenient.
