- How to move to the next level
How can I get promoted? The answer to this question should always be 100% personalized. But there are some common advice and approaches that can be applied in most cases.
First of all, regardless of whichever level you currently are and how big is your company — regularly asking for feedback and improving accordingly is the fastest way to grow. Ask from those who supervise you as well as same-level colleagues and interns that you currently mentor. Try to listen carefully, even if you don’t agree, any feedback is valuable and can be a point of growth.
I would say that the best approach to move to the next level — when you feel ready, make a presentation about your achievements during the last year with bullet points. Must be mentioned:
- What was done during this period?
What was your biggest project/challenge? Maybe you passed some courses or mentored interns? Don’t forget to mention your impact if you integrated new tools or participated in team-wise improvements (both — tech ones and team management, for example maybe you’re an agile evangelist). - How did you improve during this period?
Have you improved code quality and can prove it with recent code reviews? Do you produce bug-free releases? Did you improve the speed of development? - What are your career goals?
Why moving to the next level is important for you (hope it’s not only about salary raise).
After you make this small presentation, you will feel more confident, and also your colleagues will appreciate your impact.
If you get “no” — always ask for feedback and how can you grow.
Thank you for your time 🙏
